ASU exec give water to hot dog

WOLFVILLE - Acadia Students' Union executives Matthew Rios and Michael Tattersall provided water to a large dog Tuesday afternoon in Wolfville, NS. The dog, which had been tied to a tree for a number of hours, was spotted by ASU President Matthew Rios, tied to the tree outside his window. Recruiting the assistance of Michael Tattersall, the ASU's VP Finance, Rios filled a Tupperware container with cold water to provide the dog with some much-needed refreshment. Tattersall then proceeded to walk the dog around Acadia's campus, where it relieved itself on various campus buildings.

The dog's owner was identified shortly thereafter, and it was returned to her care.

"The ASU is committed to putting students' interests first," said Grant Oyston, VP Communications. "But dogs are definitely a close second."

This is an award for any student or faculty member can be nominated for. We are looking for anyone who sets an example and brings environmentally friendly principles into their everyday actions. The nomination is easy, please just write a paragraph detailing how your nominee lives in an environmentally friendly way and why they deserve the award and email it to Jenna Khoury-Hanna at 105876k@acadiau.ca along with the contact information for your nominee. CFUW Award Winners

Congratulations to Emma Cochrane (Political Science '13) and Stephanie Chapman (Sociology '12) , the 2012 winners of the CFUW award for their outstanding contributions to the Acadia community through their work creating the student group "Acadia Students for Enthusiastic Consent." Through their efforts, they have spearheaded a student movement to address the problem of sexual assault at Acadia, which has led to significant changes on campus. Their efforts have included the creation of a forum to discuss the extent of the problem here and solutions to it, which brought out over 60 students and many faculty. They also contributed to the creation of a two-page center spread in the Valentine's Day issue of the Athenaeum, to help raise awareness about sexual assault. Their work also contributed to pushing the university to hire the first ever female sexual assault response officer at safety and security, who is committed specifically to helping students who have been sexually assaulted. Sexual Assault awareness will also be a new component of frosh week training and there has been a brochure created and websites have been updated by the new Equity Officer and Safety & Security so students now have a resource at hand to know what to do should they be assaulted. Emma and Stef will see that this work continues next year with an ad campaign aimed at spreading the word that enthusiastic consent is the only consent.

This year’s competition was one of the hardest to decide as the entrants were all outstanding. Our other semi-finalists were Megan Muise (Sociology ’13) for her poem and work addressing violence against women and Megan MacCormac (Sociology ’12) for her historical account of Sister Mary MacCormack, a pioneering leader for women’s rights to access higher education in Quebec in the 1960s. As was noted by Winnie Horton, our CFUW representative, we were inspired by these students and they give us much optimism for the future. Congratulations to our winners and many thanks go to the CFUW for their support of Women’s and Gender Studies at Acadia.

Nominate them for the ASU’s annual Leadership in Teaching award! It is that time of year again, time to celebrate both excellence in student leadership, as well as excellence in campus teaching and instruction.

The Student Leadership Awards are held in conjunction with the ASU Leadership in Teaching Awards every year and any student can nominate another student for one of the awards listed below (NOMINATIONS DUE MARCH 28th)

Freshman of the year – A student who excels in leadership in their first year of studies at Acadia.

Sophmore of the Year – A student who excels in leadership in their second year of studies at Acadia.

Junior of the year – A student who excels in leadership in their third year of studies at Acadia.

Senior of the year – A student who excels in leadership in their fourth year of studies at Acadia.

Internal organization - An ASU Internal Organization which has provided great service to the student body throughout the year.

Club of the year – A club which has engaged a large number of students throughout the year.

ASU Commitment Award – A student who has been continuously present to support the ASU and its related endeavours on numerous different occasions.

House Council of the Year – The ASU House Council which represents its students in an exemplarily way.

Councillor of the Year – A Councillor of the SRC who has gone above and beyond their mandate in reaching out to their constituents throughout the year.

Volunteer of the year – A student who has given up their time on a volunteer basis to the benefit of the ASU and the student body.

ASU Leadership Award –A student who has displayed outstanding leadership qualities in their role throughout the year.

2012 Student of the Year Award

The Athenaeum and Associated Alumni of Acadia University Award
Created in 1981, The Student of the Year Award is presented annually to an Acadia student who has excelled throughout his/her time at Acadia. The award is presented to a nominee who has contributed to the Acadia and Wolfville communities and has worked to further the Acadia spirit through his/her extracurricular and/or academic activities. Nominees must be full-time students, with preference given to students who will be graduating in May 2012. Nominees should show good academic standing, but academic achievement is not the ultimate determining factor.Forms should be returned in a sealed envelope to one of the following locations:
Information Desk, Students’ Union Building (ATTENTION: ALICIA ROMKEY)

UPDATE: Cheaton Cup Guest Policy

In lieu of recent response to Cheaton Cup guest policy, the University and ASU have agreed that it is acceptable to have Acadia Alumni apply to come to the hockey game as a guest. This application process will include an Alumni student emailing in their full name, student number and year of graduation to Matthew Rios by Monday, March 19^th.

Those who apply will then have to be approved by Student Affairs.

Those who have applied will be contacted with whether or not they will be welcome at the game, and those who are approved will be on a guest list monitored by campus staff at the entrance to the Arena. Campus residences will continue to be closed to guests that weekend.

A film that aims to end sexism in the Media and Empower Women

WOLFVILLE, N.S. - Miss Representation first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival where it caught the eye of OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network. It made its television debut as part of the OWN documentary film club in October 2011. Hon. Scott Brison, in association with the Valley Women Business Network, is sponsoring a local screening in recognition of International Women’s Day.

The screening of Miss Representation is open to the public at no cost at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at the Al Whittle Theatre, 450 Main Street,Wolfville, N.S. This is the first screening of the film in Eastern Canada.

Written and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, Miss Representation exposes how mainstream media contribute to the under-representation of women in positions of power. The film challenges the media's limited and often disparaging portrayals of women and girls, which make it difficult for women to achieve leadership positions and for the average woman to feel powerful herself.

Miss Representation includes stories from teenage girls and provocative interviews with politicians, journalists, entertainers, activists and academics. The film offers startling facts and statistics that will leave audiences shaken and armed with a new perspective.

“We are thrilled to have so many outreach opportunities for Miss Representation. This film was made to be a change agent in our culture, to inspire both women and men to recognize women's collective voice, leadership capacity and equal rights,” says Newsom.

In a society where media is the most persuasive force shaping cultural norms, the collective message that our young women and men overwhelmingly receive is that a woman’s value and power lie in her youth, beauty, and sexuality--and not in her capacity as a leader.

“While women have made strides in leadership over the past few decades, Canada still ranks 40^th in the world in terms of women in national parliaments,” said Mr. Brison. “This film highlights the need for change and I am pleased to participate in bringing it to our community,” he said.

The distribution of the film Miss Representation has been the catalyst for a social action campaign led by MissRepresentation.org. The campaign seeks to empower women and girls and provide them with new opportunities to realize their full potential. Join the campaign at www.missrepresentation.org.
