Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is an inherited disease, affecting mainly the lungs and the digestive system. In the lungs, where the effects of the disease are most devastating, CF causes thick sticky mucus to clog the small bronchial tubes, making it difficult to breathe. In the digestive system, absorption of nutrients is inhibited, making it extremely difficult for a healthy body weight to be maintained. One out of every 3600 children born in Canada will be affected with cystic fibrosis and one out of 25 people are carriers.
In order to help with the efforts of Cystic Fibrosis Canada's fight against CF, Shinerama campaigns are run across the country every year. Shinerama is Canada’s largest university and college student fundraiser.
Four generations of enthusiastic ‘shiners’ have had great fun raising more than $21.5 million to help find a cure or an effective control for cystic fibrosis. In 2010, more than 35,000 university and college students at 60 universities and college campuses across Canada shined shoes, washed cars, polished windows, and organized numerous fundraising events in support of Shinerama, and raised more than $1 million for CF research!
Acadia University has been involved in Shinerama since it began in 1964 and participation has become a tradition during Welcome Week. This year, Acadia hopes to raise the bar higher than ever before, and can make this goal possible with your help. Contact the VP Programming (email@example.com) or the Shinerama Coordinator (firstname.lastname@example.org) for more information or to ensure your participation during the 2012 Acadia Shinerama Campaign!
